While much of Alaska has endured bitter cold snaps, driving windstorms and a darkened landscape this December, numerous Alaska churches are lit with glowing candles, adorned in traditional decorations and filled with congregants singing beloved carols in celebration of the birth of Christ.
Many area churches held Christmas Eve services to mark the Holy Night with thanksgiving, worship and praise for the coming of Emmanuel. Others will host Christmas Day services as well.
December is often consumed with frenzied present shopping, holiday concerts, cookies and parties, which sometimes obscure the historical foundation of the Christian holiday. Numerous families, however, take time to attend church on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day in order to hear the scriptural accounts of Christ’s birth and to focus on the historic roots of Christmas – the incarnation of Christ to rescue mankind from sin and restore union with God.
Times and locations of Christmas services across Alaska are listed on various church websites. Most Catholic parishes and Orthodox churches, as well as many Protestant congregations held Christmas Eve services, and scores of churches also will hold Christmas day services and liturgies.

The Yule or Saturnalia holiday is not rooted in Christianity. It is the solstice observance and predates Christianity by thousands of years. Further, the birth of Christ was in spring, Nissen 14 of the Jewish calendar. If you wish to be ignorant and misguided, attend church.
Christianity existed in the garden with Adam and predates all of the various pagan corruptions seen throughout history. Besides, whether or not our incarnate Lord was born on 25 December or Tuesday last week really is immaterial. He existed since before the world began, was at some point born a man and the Church long ago picked a day to observe it. Whine all you like, but Christ is King.
Do you think veterans all enlisted on November 11th? Or is that just the day we celebrate? As a man who it’s his faith in Jesus, I offer you God’s grace and peace this Christmas season. Even if the date of Jesus’s birth is unknown. PS. It doesn’t matter to us. I hope you find peace brother.
