Alaska’s only statewide Christian organization that promotes independent private and home education is gearing up for its 40th anniversary conference later this month in Anchorage.
Alaska Private and Home Educators Association (APHEA) advocates for educational choices that are free from unreasonable state and federal entanglements. In order to support families that choose this route, APHEA promotes political engagement and supportive inter-relationships. Its annual convention is a major part of this mission.
According to the group’s website, it affirms the fundamental right and responsibility of parents to “direct the education of their children without unreasonable restrictions by the state.” This includes providing religious training and being free to pursue educational goals that are free of government mandates and standardization.
The all-volunteer-led organization is open to anyone in Alaska who wants to support APHEA’s goals. This includes those who are considering homeschooling, currently home educating (non-affiliated or district-affiliated), concluded homeschooling, or simply desiring to support liberty, independence, and non-interference.
Membership is $25 annually, and benefits include discounts for convention attendees.
As political hostility toward homeschoolers and parental rights continues to grow, many families recognize the importance of supporting Christian organizations, such as APHEA, to stand as bulwarks for freedom and liberty.
This year’s convention occurs March 27-28 at Muldoon Community Assembly in Anchorage with keynote speaker S.D. Smith – author of the “Green Ember Series” – a children’s fantasy that chronicles two personified rabbit siblings as they fight for freedom for their animal kind. The series deals with courage and friendship, while tackling ever-transcendent themes of good vs. evil. Convention attendees and Green Ember fans will be treated to several sessions by S.D. Smith where he will guide parents on coaching creative kids, the art and science of storytelling and writing, and tips, tricks and encouragement for budding authors.
This conference aims to offer something for everyone, no matter where a family is in their individual home education journey – novice or seasoned veteran.
Since independent education doesn’t happen in a vacuum, several sessions will focus on citizenship, duties, responsibilities, rights vs. privileges, and collectivism vs. liberty.
In addition to the keynote speaker’s talks, there will be myriad sessions, workshops and activities for all ages. Children can sign up for numerous offerings, such as archery demonstrations, art classes, and the second annual chess tournament. Parents or students interested in technology may find sessions on video editing and artificial intelligence worth attending.
Families can enjoy workshops aimed at cultivating home relationships, time management strategies, and preparing nutritious food through utilizing whole grains.
Other sessions will tackle educational topics and methods, along with subject-specific information. One particular event entails a “Homeschool Freedom” panel featuring one of APHEA’s founders, a current board member, and Home School Legal Defense Association Attorney Daren Jones.

APHEA is a great organization and they put on a wonderful conference. I highly recommend for all parents who truly care about their autonomy in educating their children to attend.
Parents that stand up for the child they have and the education they will provide for them have an extra honorable place in the hearts of those who care. Take time and make a commitment to be a part of this. My family is definitely a part of this promise to our young.
This is excellent. These people are about the only ones in Alaska who understand and practice true freedom in the education of their children. State/public schools and state-run correspondence schooling (e.g,, IDEA) are all under the thumb of the government, and they take one man’s (woman’s) money by force to educate another man’s (woman’s) child. Go Alaska’s private homeschoolers.
Furthermore, the homeschooled, on average, do better in terms of academic learning and achievement, social and emotional development, and success into adulthood. See the research facts at https://nheri.org/research-facts-on-homeschooling/
My kids love going to the convention every year. We wholeheartedly recommend it.
