On Monday, May 4, the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolf Debate team will face off against the U.S. Air Force Academy for a heated debate on the UAA campus.

The teams will debate the controversial idea of imposing a 3% sales tax on Anchorage residents. That proposal was first floated last year by Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance, but was shelved by the Anchorage Assembly earlier this year in favor of trying to get residents to approve expensive bond-debt packages to fund schools.

According to the latest tallies from the April 7 election, it appears the school bonds packages are headed to a narrow defeat, which means the 3% sales tax proposal might soon be back under consideration.

During the upcoming UAA debate, the contest will be judged by an expert panel from the community. Their votes – along with an audience poll – will determine the winner. Tickets are $24 for adults and $13 for middle, high school and college students.

The debate will feature UAA students Casi LeBlanc and Ashton Bednar, who will square off against cadets from USAFA – Fallon Eggett and Audrey Neukomm. USAFA team is the top-ranked team in the nation.  

The debate begins at 7 p.m. in the UAA Fine Arts Building, Room 150 (Recital Hall).
