Editor’s note: Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy issued the following statement on Feb. 10 regarding the unidentified flying object that was shot down this morning over Alaskan waters.
Today’s announcement by the Pentagon that an unidentified object was shot down by an F-22 from Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson over Alaska’s coastline raises serious national security concerns that should concern every American. I want to thank our Alaska-based military for eliminating the potential threat before it was flying over our land.
This latest intrusion into our airspace raises serious questions about the White House’s decision to not shoot down a Chinese spy balloon last week when it was above the Aleutian Chain and prevent it from flying over important military sites in the Lower-48.
Unlike other states, Alaska is truly on the front lines. Because of our close proximity to our neighbors there is very little margin for error. Russian territory is only a few miles away. We are the one state closest to the Korean Peninsula and China. Alaska is truly on the front lines.
As such, decisions need to be made quickly to preserve the territorial integrity of Alaska and the United States. This incident is further evidence that the military capability of Alaska is robust. An important discussion should ensue about improving those capabilities, including icebreakers, Army, Air Force and Navy capabilities.
If the last few days are any indication, this may be the new norm and we must be prepared. The Alaska National Guard is working closely with USNORTHCOM and other agencies to provide any support as requested.
This latest incident demonstrates that Alaska remains the most strategic place on earth for both geopolitics and national defense.

The Pentagon is trying to gain back the trust of Alaskans and the US. Who knows who the balloon belongs to. What a pony show. Is this to make us complacent or fearful? Concentrate on staying healthy folks. Who knows who is trying to pull what and if it will have consequences for our health.
What’s wrong with you people? Pentagon officials told us over and over again what the deal was. None of you can help yourselves from spreading all the grandiose conspiracies. Read a book how these decisions are made.
Perhaps you can point to some of the so called “conspiracies”.. I’ll wait for that.. And, no, the Pentagon did not tell us over, and over again what the deal was.. The only time that we heard from the Pentagon was after it had been spotted by the public, and reported.. If they knew what the deal was.. and actually,.. they finally did admit that they did know before it entered the Aleutian Island chain,.. then why didn’t they secure our sovereign borders, and take it down over open waters in the Pacific ? Our national security is no joking matter, unless all you do is sit around reading books.
If it’s over our air space and not authorized it needs to be shot down. That includes your private aircraft that you failed to log the flight on. They admitted that they knew it was Chinese ” before ” it entered the Aleutian airspace… It had the markings on it’s shell .. They knew it was about to enter our sovereign borders, and it could have easily been taken down over the open waters of the Pacific ocean… So, yes, the Idiot in chief did wait too long… Suppose I come over to your home, just walk in, and start taking videos of your home without your consent.. No problem, aye ? The democrats will always find some way to protect their politicians, regardless of the consequences.
Fair enough, but the way I’m perceiving this is that the US intelligence was not examining the balloon haphazardly without an inkling about what the tech was or was not. The Chinese employ hypersonic and stealth weaponry in their arsenal. It would seem that the tech in the balloon would be considered arbitrarily and ridiculously inconsequential if it mattered at all. OR… Who knows, perhaps the defense thinking is it could also contain a bio hazard??? To what unknown consequence would that reveal if that debris fell on home turf? I doubt the intel revealed to Biden was in the form of, “we need to obliterate it Mr President!!” And then Biden was like, “meh, I don’t want to upset the Chinese.” That’s the way all this garbage was portrayed. I’m hard pressed to believe the decision process was simply shoot it don’t shoot. Intel seemed to know what it was there for and you can bet Canada and the US were tracking the dang thing long before it hit the media.
Luckily, national defense of the USA rests in the hands of the Federal Government, not the states. Even back in the revolution, it was George Washington and the collective government that got us free. It has the been the whole country, its citizens from all 50 states and the military, that have kept us free. Why make a political dig about Biden…he follows the advice of the military experts. No one wants a AIM missile falling into a small town, power plant, or school. I am glad they waited to blast the first balloon over the Atlantic. That was only a short distance from where my Mom lives in SC. And I am glad we obviously are able to now detect and evaluate new objects. I am very interested to see if this new “car sized” object was a drone or something else. It probably wasn’t up to good on its trajectory. Thank you Alaska for supporting the collective defense 🙂

Russian jets have been encoaching into Alaskan airspace for years. And Wainwright drives them back. That, has become normal. Nothing new. But, a UFO flying within 25 miles of Deadhorse and the start of the Alaskan Oil Pipeline is definitely not normal.
All we can hope for is that our Government will be totally transparent and let us know that it was an UFO , and not another Chinese Ballon . And announce it public what they shot down . The Truth !!

Sarah, those balloons could have been taking down by using drones to puncture holes in the balloon walls to make them lose air slowly, thus control the descent and recover the balloons in one piece. But, the White House decided to be extreme and blow them up instead. National security takes priority, but apparently not a priority to the White House or Alaska’s governor.

Now now (interesting name!), actually I listen Jeffrey Prather’s videos/podcasts. Jeffrey Prather is retired military and keeps in close touch with many facets of the government and the military. Everybody wants to blame someone for everything, and everyone thinks they know what to do but I certainly wouldn’t put you in control of any military anything, you’re just not qualified. The truth is you don’t even know what was shot down none of us do. Spreading conspiracies and disinformation is in itself fear-mongering.
China gets a free pass over American airspace by the White house, this must have belonged to Russia. Just a guess, I wonder if we will ever be told the truth.
This is pre-war activity. They need to know where the missiles are, where the planes are, where the pipeline pump stations are ect.
