Over the next week or so, the Mat-Su Borough Assembly will select a replacement for Rob Yundt, an outspoken conservative who recently stepped down due to moving outside his Assembly district boundary lines.

Former Mat-Su Assemblyman Rob Yundt

Yundt is currently running for Alaska State Senate – attempting to unseat State Senator David Wilson, of Wasilla, who has fallen into disfavor among many conservatives for refusing to help form a GOP majority despite the fact that Alaskans elected a Republican majority to the 20-member Senate.

Yundt stepped down from the Borough Assembly earlier this month, when his family moved into a new home. He served District 4 from 2020 through 2023 and was re-elected in November 2023.

The current majority-conservative Mat-Su Assembly will appoint a person to fill Yundt’s seat during a special meeting on Oct. 1. Applications to fill the post are open until Sept. 27 at 5 p.m.

To qualify for the Assembly seat, candidates must currently reside in District 4 (see map) and have lived there throughout the past year.

District 4 includes the city of Wasilla and the greater Wasilla area (from Seward Merdian to the east, to Sylvan Road in the west, to Spruce Avenue to the North, and runs along part of the north side of Knik Goose Bay Road).

Those who are unsure if they reside in District 4 can contact the Clerk’s Office or click here to see a map.

Applications for the open seat can be found here, or by contacting the Clerk’s Office at (907) 861-8683, or by visiting the office at 350 E. Dahlia Avenue to pick up a paper copy.

The chosen candidate will then need to file a financial disclosure form with the Alaska Public Offices Commission within 30 days of appointment.
