William Northrop

The man in charge of preparing, conducting and supervising Anchorage’s mail-in voting system has abruptly quit his post right in the middle of the city’s spring election.

While Election Day is on April 1, on March 11, the city mailed out 204,000 ballots, which began arriving in post boxes on March 18. That essentially kicked off what has become a complicated two-week voting period in which residents drop off ballots in the mail or at drop boxes and vote centers. During this time, ballots are continually pouring into the election headquarters.

According to a March 26 announcement from Municipal Clerk Jamie Heinz, Election Administrator William Northrop resigned effective immediately. No reason was given for his departure.

“Mr. Northrop has respectfully resigned from his position as the Municipal Election Administrator,” Heinz stated. “As we near Election Day on April 1, I will lead the MOA Election Team in our work to administer the Regular Municipal Election and can assure the public that this change has not and will not affect the integrity of the election. We thank Mr. Northrop for his service to the community and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Northrop worked directly under Heinz, and his extensive duties included determining whether candidates for municipal office are qualified, in accordance with the law. According to city code, he was also “responsible for the overall administration of municipal elections, including, but not limited to: application of election related information systems, election related systems standards and procedures, acquisitions of election related computer equipment, and related products and services.”

Heinz is now taking on these duties in addition to her work as city clerk.

In 2018, Anchorage moved to a mail-in only election system, which means all qualified registered voters have ballots automatically sent to their address, even if they have moved or died. Mail-in ballots are the type most vulnerable to being altered, stolen, forged or thrown into non-secure areas like public garbage cans and dumpsters.

Show us any proof that vote-by-mail is insecure. We know why RINOs hate it — because it is the aged idlers who have time to stand in line, and these people tend to vote Republican.
And yes, YOU guys are the RINOs. Trump is a disgrace to the party that gave us men like Eisenhower, Rockefeller, and George Romney.

    • GOP is Weak and Dead says:

Gotcha, so what you are saying is you are a #GOPsycophant…you are the reason the weak GOP in Alaska keeps losers and corrupt people in office.
Alaska GOP is disgraceful and not Republican.

    • Elizabeth Henry says:

It is the lazy, entitlement minded, Marxist leaning, who think waiting in line to vote is beneath them. They certainly do not vote Republican but light vote RINO. You exhibit classic ‘psycho’logical projection well.

Cherry-picking goofy examples that are mistakes with no intent of fraud (seriously, some mail scattered on the ground is a security problem?).
“Among the billions of votes from 2000 to 2012, there were 491 known cases of absentee ballot fraud.”

      • Steve says:

@UnReal Dave Maxwell, how many unknown cases of absentee ballot fraud were there? Kind of like open boarders, there’s a count of known immigrants illegally crossing, but not a count of unknown immigrants illegally crossings. So your statement hold about as much water as a colander does.

  • Steve says:

Dave, you must not be willing to give up anything for the security of your country. If waiting in line is too much of a burden for you then I truly pity you.

  • Anchorage Voters are Weak says:

“The integeity of the election” Anchorage elections haven’t had integrity in a decade. Anchorage voters don’t care they are sleeping at the wheel while crook and thieves continue to destroy.

Will the system hurry up and crumble already? What keeps it held up anyways?

  • JTF says:

The integrity of any election is totally destroyed with mail in voting !
