We recently, told you about Mahmoud v. Taylor, the US Supreme Court case brought by Montgomery County, MD, parents who had been denied an opportunity to opt their children out of LGBTQ storybook lessons in their local elementary schools.
Alaska Family Council had been watching this case for months because we knew that many Alaskan parents had faced a similar situation in their own schools and that, for better or for worse, what happened in Mahmoud would have ripple effects here in the Great Land. Who would ultimately have the court on their side – the parents, or the school?
In June, we got the good news – SCOTUS decided on behalf of the parents!
If at any point during the school year your child’s school does not respect your rights, or if you aren’t sure if your rights are properly respected, Alaska Family Council wants to hear from you!
The highest court in the land recognized the fundamental constitutional right of parents to direct the religious upbringing of their children – even while attending public school. They agreed with the plaintiff parents that forcing children to read books promoting ideas about gender and sexuality at odds with their family’s religious beliefs was a violation of that right.
As part of our mission to protect parental rights, Alaska Family Council is providing an opt-out form that parents of faith with objections to the LGBTQIA agenda can now use to opt their children out of sex ed, instructional activities and programs covering issues of sexual orientation or gender identity, surveys, and name/pronoun changes related to social transition.
Please share this important resource far and wide with those you know with children in Alaska public schools. In addition, in 2023, Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor sent a memo to all Alaska school districts clarifying that parents have the right to be informed at least two weeks in advance when this kind of material is presented to students and that they have the authority to opt their children out of such instruction. Please share this resource with those who might be interested, including your local school officials, so they can be informed as well.
Mom and Dad, we recommend that you submit this opt out letter on the first day of school. Submit the letter by email to your child’s teacher and school principal, and request confirmation so you know they received it. Keep a friendly and open dialogue with your child’s teacher so that if there are any questions about a specific issue that comes up, you can resolve them.
ALASKA WATCHMAN DIRECT TO YOUR INBOX
If at any point during the school year your child’s school does not respect your rights, or if you aren’t sure if your rights are properly respected, Alaska Family Council wants to hear from you! We stand ready to help parents ensure that their rights under Mahmoud and state law are protected.

“JIM MINNERY WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU”
HEY JIM WHEN IF EVER HAVE YOU ADDRESSED THIS WITH DUNLEAVY????? CANT REMEMBER HUH?! THATS BECAUSE THE ANSWER IS NEVER!!!
REMEMBER CHLOE COLE? YOUR ACCOMADATING ACTIONS TOWARDS DUNLEAVY WERE A HIGHPOINT OF EMBARRASSMENT FOR YOU AND YOUR ESTABLISHMENT!!!
I still don’t understand why this bull cr@% is even in our school.
What about all you LGBTQ freaks, have to opt out of a Bible verse being read every day in class.
I’ve said this sooooo many times, Please take your kids out of these disgusting public schools.
I still don’t understand why this sickening material is even in our school.
What about all you LGBTQ freaks, have to opt out of a Bible verse being read every day in class.
No one would have to opt out of a Bible verse being read every day in class, because such a thing is unconstitutional in the first place. LGBTQ+ people, on the other hand, are just as much a partr of the fabric of American society as you are.
Right, but stop pushing your lifestyle on me or others.
What you do in your own home I don’t give a Blank.
Where were these sickening books back in our days, not in our schools
The LGBTQ people have all the rights as anyone else. Just stop push your agenda and just be part of American, yes we can all get along. But again Stop pushing your Sin-sickness on society.
So normal people, who want their kids to learn basic math, science, reading…have to opt out of the “alphabet” teachings, yet Bible reading is unconstitutional?! Christians are a normal part of this nation as well. How about not teaching it with people’s tax money, and letting them opt in teaching it at home if they desire. This perversion has no place in any school. My opinion, which is constitutional-deal with it.
Despite what you believe hearing about LGBTQ+ will not make you child gay or trans or…..It seems that most of LGBTQ+ is from birth, not learned. So if you ban this then teachers need to stop reading stories about heterosexual people as well. Also no stories about families of any kind. Reap what you sow all.
I find it curious that the broken rainbow brigade demand human rights. They feel uncomfortable with what being a human is, so they demand the rules be changed to fit them better.
Maybe it is something in the food and water supply, or perhaps all the hair die that is frying their brains.
One thing for sure, they have turned into a perverse cult that seeks to cancel anyone who tells them no.
Jon being stupid again
