Requiring impressionable elementary-age students to sit in a classroom taught by a biological male who wears dresses and claims to be a woman is an afront to Alaska Native culture and the religious beliefs of parents.
This was the message that Alaska Native parents and concerned residents of Bethel relayed during an Aug. 26 meeting of the Bethel Advisory School Board.
“The majority of students are Native – they’re Yup’ik,” said Julie Carter, who’s granddaughter is assigned to the transgender teacher’s class. “We would like our teachers to be culturally competent and to respect the Yup’ik tradition here.”
The teacher in question is Madeliene Tietz, an LGBTQ activist who attends drag dance performances and posts social media photos of himself wearing dresses. He was hired to teach a sixth-grade class at Gladys Jung Elementary School in Bethel, after facing parental complaints at previous jobs in Wisconsin and the Alaska Native village of Kwigillingok.
“Transgender ideology is not in Yup’ik culture,”
Carter said Tietz’s behavior undermines traditional Yup’ik Native values that she is trying to instill in her granddaughter, who is a member of the Hooper Bay Tribe.
“She came back and said there is a teacher who is using the girls’ bathroom, and he’s a male,” Carter told the advisory board. “She said he was in there for quite a while, and she didn’t want to use the bathroom.”
“That’s not part of our Yup’ik culture,” Carter continued. “I would like the LGBT people to respect our Yup’ik culture. This lifestyle is not part of our tradition. It’s their tradition.”
She noted that outside teachers come and go, but many Native families remain in their ancestral lands.
Like several others, Carter said her granddaughter may be homeschooling this year, just to avoid Tietz’s classroom.
The Bethel Advisory School Board members, who serve to relay local concerns to the Lower Kuskokwim School Board, listened as other residents echoed similar testimony.
A Bethel resident of 40-plus years told the board that she’s seen many ideologies introduced into the community over the years.
“Transgender ideology is not in Yup’ik culture,” she emphasized. “The forcing of transgender ideology into the families of the community of Bethel is in conflict with the core values of parents and grandparents of children who go to the Glady’s Jung school.”
The fact that some children have left the school is a travesty, she said.
“They don’t feel comfortable in that setting and in fact feel fearful about some of this new ideology that is being presented in our community,” the woman shared. “It’s not okay – it’s not in our culture, and to those individuals who say, that because we think this way, we are hateful or practicing bigotry, that’s not correct.”
She said transgender activists are simply attempting to “put people down” for trying to uphold their “own core values.”
Three testifiers spoke in favor of Tietz, claiming that criticism about the gender-confused teacher amounted to “hate and bigotry” and “discrimination.”
Stephanie Butte, the administrative secretary for Bethel Regional High School, said a teacher’s gender identity should be “respected and valued.” Failure to do so would set the school up for “further discrimination,” she claimed.
The right of parents to guide their children’s moral and cultural and social development must be respected.”
Most other speakers disagreed, arguing that elementary schools should be safe havens where children can focus on learning without being subjected to controversial sexual-identities.
“When male staff present themselves as female in front of children, it introduces complex social and moral issues that are not age appropriate,” one testifier said. “Parents are telling us that children are coming home confused and are asking questions that many families [believe] belong first in the home. The right of parents to guide their children’s moral and cultural and social development must be respected.”
She added that the school district claims to “respect diversity,” but that should include also respecting the “culture and social values of the families who entrust their children to the school district.”
“Protect children’s innocence and honor parental authority,” she said.
Sharon Carter, the mother of a sixth-grader in Tietz class, explained that her daughter is a practicing Christian who has been taught that lying is wrong, including going along with the lie that Tietz has somehow turned himself into a woman.
“This is in fact a lie – it is not true,” Carter said. “A biological male will always have the same chromosomes in every cell no matter how much they try to change their appearance – they will always be a male.”

A former teacher in the district then told the advisory board that schools should have high academic and character standards for all employees. Yup’ik culture places a high value on strong men and women, she said, adding that this belief is built into the very fabric of their traditional language.
Another teacher, who is currently not under contract, then spoke up, saying no male teacher should ever be allowed to access female bathrooms.
“If a man walks into a girls’ bathroom, I should be reporting that,” he said.
By forcing children to go along with his identity issues, Tietz is essentially pushing his values and sexual beliefs on impressionable children, the man added.
“This is very unethical,” he told the advisory board.
The school’s decision to hire Tietz has prompted at least a third of families to remove their children from his class, pending requests to transfer to another teacher. Some parents have opted to homeschool rather than subject their children to Tietz’s class.

There are people in villages who repress their homosexuality because others refuse to accept it. One can say that their culture doesn’t have people who are other than the status quo, male or female. The state opens moose hunting this time of the year and in the majority of the units they make laws telling us that we can only harvest a male moose. I wonder if they would let me get away with it if I harvested a female moose and told them that it was a trans moose.
The grooming of children and perversion in society needs to be addressed – this is how a society kills itself. Real investigations need to be done into the environmental impacts that are causing this surge in mental illness. Ultimately, there is no such thing as “transgender” unless you are a hermaphrodite., and even then the term is not quite fitting. These gender dysphoric individuals can only dress up, take drugs and rearrange or remove body parts in an attempt to recreate themselves. That is a form of mental illness, and society has no responsibility to accept it, much less affirm it. And now we have had how many of these people go on shooting rampages? Society needs to return to reality and get these people the mental help they need instead of agreeing to their delusions.

For those who believe, no proof is required, but for those who do not believe, no proof will be sufficient. Try a little humility. It goes a long way toward peace and happiness.
Take your kids out of these schools, immediately. If this is what they are accepting and hiring god knows what else is going on behind closed doors, it does not matter your origins or skin color, what matters is simple decency and morality and if neither exist then its a huge red flag.
