Nearly 195 million salmon were harvested in the 2025 Alaska season, which amounts to an 88% increase over last year when just 103 million were harvested.
According to the Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game, the value of the harvest also saw a massive increase, going from $304 million in 2024 to approximately $541 this year. This was due to both a larger catch and better prices.
SPECIES BREAKDOWN FOR 2025 HARVEST
— Sockeye = 58% of the total value ($315 million) and 27% of harvest (53 million fish)
— Pink = 21% of the value ($114 million) and 61% of harvest (119 million fish)
— Chum = 14% of value ($78 million) and 10% of harvest (20 million fish)
— Coho = 4% of value ($21 million) and 1% of harvest (2 million fish)
— Chinook salmon harvest was 182,000 fish with an estimated value of $12 million.
While the harvest and prices rose this year, the total number of individual permit holders who delivered fish dropped from 5,304 last year to 5,249 this year.
When compared to the long-term trends (1985–2024), the 2025 all-species commercial salmon harvest of approximately 195 million fish and 793 million pounds was the 12th highest on record for total fish harvested, and near average for total pounds harvested.
Adjusted for inflation, however, the 2025 exvessel value (the dollar amount received by fishermen for their catch when fish are unloaded from the commercial fishing boat) estimate of $541 million was the 13th lowest exvessel value reported since 1975.
The 2025 commercial harvest was 9% lower than the preseason harvest projection of 214.6 million fish.
These are preliminary harvest and value estimates which will change as fish tickets are processed and finalized. Dollar values provided by ADF&G are based on estimated exvessel prices and do not include post-season price adjustments. The final value of the 2025 salmon fishery will be determined in 2026 after seafood buyers and processors report the total value paid to fishermen in 2025.
