Its been said that gratitude is at the core of being human. It unlocks the soul, opens wide the heart and turns one’s face heavenward to seek and address the author of all goodness, truth and beauty.

While life does not always play out exactly as we’d hoped, and everyone shoulders a measure of suffering, pain and grief, we still have profound cause to give thanks.

Our mere entrance into existence was pure gift. We had no role in the matter, nor did we fashion the forests, mountains, oceans or brilliant Northern Lights. We did not design the earth or its enchanting beauty. All was given, as were our family members and friends, both living and dead.

We are also blessed to live in a nation that – while not perfect – was founded with the express intent to defend our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It was hard-won long before we were born.

This Thanksgiving we do well to recall our unmerited blessings, to share what we can and to offer sincere gratitude to the Creator and source of it all.

Happy Thanksgiving Alaska.
