The unofficial results of the mail-in Anchorage election were posted late Tuesday night. With thousands of ballots yet to be counted, there are a several razor close races among candidates for the Anchorage Assembly and the Anchorage School Board. Depending on the final outcome these elected bodies could swing more conservative.
As of April 7, more than 45,000 voters had cast ballots, but residents had until 8 p.m. to mail in their votes, and many more are expected to arrive over the next few days. To date, just 19% of the 232,298 registered Anchorage voters have submitted ballots.
As things stand, it looks as if most bond propositions are on their way to victory, while pot-shop smoking lounges are headed to defeat. The 5% alcohol sales tax is too close to call, and voters approved adding an additional 12th seat on the Anchorage Assembly.
Among the candidates, conservative pro-life Jamie Allard looks like she is headed to victory on the Anchorage Assembly, while left-leaning Austin Quinn-Davidson and Pete Peterson appear they will keep their seats. Two other races are very tight with solid traditional family values candidates – Christine Hill and Rick Costillo – attempting to unseat Felix Rivera and Suzanne LaFrance respectively. For school board, conservative Dave Donley will likely keep his seat, as will the more liberal Andy Holleman.
Official results will be available after the Anchorage Assembly certifies the outcome two weeks after the election. Below are unofficial results so far.
