In this episode, we sit down with Barbara Gerard, Principal of Academy Charter School to discuss the Academy model of schooling, and the first principles of core knowledge curriculum. We also discuss charter schools in MatSu and Alaska, the best in the nation as a group, with Academy Charter School ranking highest of all the State of Alaska charter schools in performance, as measured by the Harvard University Study and published in Education Next. We also discuss the portion of the bond that is a set-aside for the high school build for Academy Charter, and what it will mean for kids currently aging out of the program, to be able to continue in a culture that celebrates learning.

I became aware of core knowledge after reading Hirsch’s book on core knowledge. The curriculum is what many of us seniors had in school. The whole concept is the fact that we no longer have “core knowledge” in our schools in America. I have also followed this school since it began. The sad story here is this could happen in all our public schools if we demanded it but do not.
