Alaska’s Congressman Nick Begich is leading the charge to ban states from using ranked choice voting in federal elections – which includes contests for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House and presidential elections.

Begich is co-sponsoring the Preventing Ranked Choice Corruption Act, alongside Arizona Congressman Abraham Hamadeh. Their legislation aims to protect the integrity of America’s elections by addressing what they see as growing voter confusion and disenfranchisement with ranked-choice voting systems.

Ranked choice lets voters to rank candidates in order of preference. If a majority is not reached after the initial vote, the candidate with the fewest votes gets eliminated, and votes are redistributed based on voters’ second choices. This scheme allows for a majority party to be split between preferred candidates, thus allowing a minority candidate a pathway to victory – which would have never been possible without rank-choice.

“The nation does not need more uncertainty and confusion injected into the federal election process,” Begich noted in a prepared statement. “One person, one vote’ is a proven, tried and true method that is easy to understand, easy to audit, and quick to report. Experiments with our national election systems risk disenfranchisement of voters and lead to outcomes that do not represent the true will of the American people.”

Co-sponsor Hamadeh emphasized the dangers ranked choice poses to election integrity nationwide.

“The same Democrat pawns who support allowing non-citizen voting without voter ID and same-day voter registration also want to turn our Democracy into a rank choice voting scheme,” he stated. “Their motives are clear – they do not want to help Americans vote – they only want to help corrupt politicians win.”

The Preventing Ranked Choice Corruption Act looks to reaffirm America’s commitment to a straightforward auditable election process – ensuring that no voter is left confused or disenfranchised.

“Let us list some of the questions that the more honorable right-wing folks might eventually ask themselves:

How could I have been so ignorant?
How could I have been so wrong?
How could I have been so easily manipulated?
How could I have fallen for the con man’s pitch?
How was I so easily corrupted?
How were my Christian values and God’s moral laws so easily and enthusiastically ignored and transgressed?
What made me so easily sell out to false promises of economic gain for my tribe, class, or group?
Why was I so desperate to be called Great by someone so untrustworthy?”
