Palmer Mayor Steve Carrington

The special election to recall Palmer Mayor Steve Carrington for alleged abuse of power is razor tight. As of election night there were 99 votes to recall him and 97 to retain.

Total turnout appears to be extremely low – just 3.87% as of election night, or 196 voters out of a possible 5,068.

The canvass board will meet on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Palmer City Council Chambers to verify and tally another 193 absentee, questioned, early and special needs ballots.

Preliminary election results are expected to be updated Friday, May 23, in the late afternoon. Final election results are scheduled for certification at the May 27, Regular Council Meeting.

Carrington has served as Palmer mayor since 2021, first replacing Edna DeVries who was elected Mat-Su Borough Mayor. In 2022, he was elected mayor in a regular election, and his term expires later this year.

The recall effort was based on allegations that the mayor “abused executive power by seeking outside legal counsel to draft an amendment/modification to the existing contract for the city manager without the knowledge or authorization of City Council.”

Carrington continues to maintain that he “acted in good faith, doing my best to help the city navigate a volatile moment.”

What’s not mentioned is his ugly treatment of the women during the session to oust Jellie. The snickering, dismissal, and outright ignoring of legitimate concerns. Vote him out!
