Editor’s note: The following proclamation was issued by Gov. Mike Dunleavy today in honor of Charlie Kirk.

Oct 14, 2025

WHEREAS, the Constitution of the United States, through the First Amendment, secures for every citizen the right to speak freely, to assemble peaceably, and to engage in open and honest debate, which are the foundations of liberty and a republican form of government; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Kirk, born October 14, 1993, devoted his life to the defense of these freedoms, founding Turning Point USA and traveling across the nation to speak in forums, classrooms, and campuses where his convictions were often met with opposition; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Kirk exemplified uncommon courage in pursuing dialogue where it was most difficult, showing that civil debate and principled discourse strengthen our republic and encourage and sustain the unity of the American people; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Kirk challenged people with grace to think critically about their beliefs, fought for the rights of those who disagreed with him to speak freely, and was a model example of how to live his faith as a Christian while fighting for the truth; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Kirk gave his life in defense of these freedoms, reminding us that liberty is never free, and that the duty to protect it is the responsibility of every American and every generation; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the State of Alaska both honor his legacy and recommit itself to the enduring protection of the First Amendment.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim October 14, 2025, as:

Charlie Kirk Day
In Recognition of the First Amendment

in Alaska and encourage all Alaskans to honor his example by practicing civil dialogue, protecting the right of free expression, and preserving the liberty that defines our nation.

We as a people need to wake up, set aside our arrogant self-regard & open our minds to the incredible accomplishments of a self-educated, highly intelligent God-fearing teen prodigy entrepreneur who made it big at 17, becoming a husband & father who relished, using knowledge, logic & God’s wisdom, the free & open exchange of differing opinions. Charlie would speak 2, 3 times weekly at different colleges, varying venues; respectfully encouraging students to challenge his opinions, to prove him wrong.
Doing what was his passion, Charlie, 31 yrs old was murdered 4 weeks ago while answering a question posed by a college student,
We do need to honor this young man of utmost integrity, sound moral character and Godly principles, as he is an example ALL young men, women should endeavor to exemplify.
