Kodiak voters will finally have a chance to see longtime left-leaning Republican Louise Stutes debate conservative newcomer Heath Smith in an Oct. 6 clash.

While the debate won’t happen in Stutes’ hometown of Kodiak, after she refused to engage Heath on her home turf, voters can still watch the Homer Chamber of Commerce showdown via Zoom, on Oct. 6 at 5:30 p.m.

After years of abandoning her GOP colleagues in the State House in order to caucus with (and empower a Democratic controlled majority), Stutes is now attempting to win the State Senate seat of retiring Sen. Gary Stevens.

Stutes and Smith are the two leading candidates to represent Senate District C, which covers South Kenai and Kodiak.

While both candidates are registered Republicans, they represent two different sides of the GOP coin. Stutes has made a name for herself as a Republican who joins with Democrats to marginalize conservative lawmakers and their priorities in the State Legislature. Heath, on the other hand, describes himself as a pro-energy development, fiscal conservative who will support policies that encourage small business growth, reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens and attract responsible investment.

The two candidates will finally square off on Tuesday, October 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Kachemak Bay College Campus in Homer. Viewers can join in person or watch at this Zoom link.
