Following an attack on the building that houses the GOP headquarters in Fairbanks, Police Chief Ron Dupee issued a strongly worded statement condemning political violence on the eve of the General Election.
Violence was first reported on Nov. 4, when a caller alerted police vandalism on Barnette Street, where multiple windows had been shattered in the building housing Republican campaign offices.
“While I won’t speculate on a motive for this vandalism before an investigation is complete, I understand that there are concerns this was politically related,” Police Chief Dupee stated Nov. 4. “I acknowledge how divisive politics can be and I urge the residents of Fairbanks to remember that we are all part of this community, and we need to remain united despite our differences. I strongly condemn any form of political, or non-political, violence or vandalism-these actions go against the very principles we strive to uphold. FPD will do the best we can to hold individuals who perpetrate those types of actions responsible. We don’t want that kind of nonsense in our community.”
The investigation is ongoing, and Fairbanks Police have been notified of additional acts of vandalism in the city. Police are asking that anyone with any information or camera footage of acts of vandalism contact the department at 907-450-6500.
