Thanks to conservative political momentum at the national level, President Trump is aggressively rolling back federal funding for abortion groups, DEI initiatives and the LGBTQ agenda. This has spurred hard-left groups like Planned Parenthood to fight more targeted, local battles to advance their radical agenda in Alaska and beyond.

“Here’s the truth: A second Trump presidency won’t control us,” a defiant Rose O’Hara declared in a March 11 email. O’Hara is the Planned Parenthood statewide field director for Alaska.

“In Alaska, we’re proving that state and local action is where change happens,” she wrote. “We’ve already shown that Alaskans control their own future – no matter what’s happening at the White House.”

O’Hara’s email boasts that Planned Parenthood has been able to help secure victories for pro-abortion candidates in local elections across the state.

“We’ve flipped the script in Alaska’s largest cities,” she observed. “Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Juneau now have pro-reproductive health majorities in their school boards, assemblies, and city leadership. And we’ve built a pro-reproductive health majority in both the Alaska House and Senate. We’re not waiting for Washington, D.C. to get it right. We’re doing it ourselves.”

O’Hara’s assessment is correct. Over the past decade or so, hard-line leftists have created supermajorities in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Juneau – controlling all levels of local politics. Additionally, Democrats now control both houses of the Alaska State Legislature.

Clearly, Planned Parenthood sees local political clout as a bulwark against national policies that seek to block taxpayer funding for groups like Planned Parenthood.

While the Mat-Su Borough has remained a bastion of conservative politics, many areas of Alaska are in the midst of an ongoing battle over the direction of their school boards, city councils and borough assemblies.
