Anchorage parents might consider following the lead of a local Washington State school board, which has filed a formal civil rights complaint against Washington State officials for policies and practices leading to sex-based discrimination in schools and student athletics, as well as policies that hide a child’s gender-identity status from parents.

While the State of Alaska does not mandate these types of policies for local districts, highly controversial and possibly illegal transgender protocols are practiced in the Anchorage School District, which is governed by a hard-left supermajority on the school board.

In Washington, Kennewick School Board submitted a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR), requesting “URGENT federal intervention due to open and egregious Title IX violations currently occurring within the state’s student athletics as well as requisite school district policies mandated by the state which are direct violation of Title IX.”

They specifically cite Washington State policies that “allow biologic males to participate in female athletics in direct violation of the Executive Orders issued by President Donald J. Trump on January 20, 2025, and February 5, 2025.”

The complaint explains that the district is stuck between potentially losing state funds for not complying with state transgender mandates or losing federal funding for not complying with President Trump’s executive orders.

Additionally, the Kennewick School Board cited the fact that Washington State requires schools to withhold a child’s gender identity from parents, which is similar to practices that occur in the Anchorage School District.

The 2024-25 Anchorage School District High School Activities Handbook states the following:

All students will be permitted to participate in intramural sports in a manner that is consistent with their gender identity consistently expressed at school. Furthermore, all students will be permitted to participate in District sponsored interscholastic athletics in a manner consistent with their gender identity.

That means gender-confused biological males can compete on girls-only sports teams at the local district level.

Additionally, the Anchorage School District’s Office of Equity and Compliance enforces transgender guidelines that block parents from knowing the gender-identity status of their child.

I have had a proposed change in existing ASD “Administrative Guidelines” that fail to ensure parental notice and allow boys to play girls sports stuck in parliamentary limbo for almost two years. My changes would at least make parental notification the standard procedure and includes provisions for student safety. Without a second Board Member’s support it will probably never be even debated, even though the current “guideline” seems to violate the direction of the State Board of Education. As always, I am speaking only for myself and not the Anchorage School Board or the School District. Dave Donley

Mr. Donley, there are certainly more people on your side than you might know. The vast majority of good parents are for sure. I say good because good people want what is right and just. Hold on, Mr. Donley, help is on the way. Lord, I pray so! Thank you for your good work on the school board and your time in government. I recall you coming to my door back in the late 80’s hoping for votes. Keep on keeping on!
