Palmer Mayor Steve Carrington has successfully survived an attempt to remove him from office for alleged abuse of power. After trailing by two votes on election night 99-97, he surged ahead once the canvass board tallied another 202 mail, special needs, early and questioned ballots.

The final tally has Carrington winning with 222 voting against the recall and 176 voting for it. Total turnout included 398 out of a possible 5,068 registered voters.

The canvass board released its tally on May 23. Final election results are scheduled for certification at the May 27, Regular Council Meeting.

Carrington has served as Palmer mayor since 2021, first replacing Edna DeVries who was elected Mat-Su Borough Mayor. In 2022, he was elected mayor in a regular election, and his term expires later this year.

The recall effort was based on allegations that the mayor “abused executive power by seeking outside legal counsel to draft an amendment/modification to the existing contract for the city manager without the knowledge or authorization of City Council.”

Carrington continues to maintain that he “acted in good faith, doing my best to help the city navigate a volatile moment.”

Check the two documents. The most recent one uploaded by the city shows the clerk found or issued 18 ballots more than were reported on election night. How do 18 ballots show up after an election is over that were not issued before the end of the election?
