In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, renowned Hillsdale College professor Dr. Wilfred McClay is coming to Anchorage for a free, public lecture titled “Are We Still a Land of Hope?”

The acclaimed author and teacher will speak from 5:30-7 p.m. on July 3 at the University of Alaska, Anchorage campus in the ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building, Room 120. Parking is free.

Dr. McClay is an accomplished historian, particularly in American intellectual history, Western civilization, and the history of liberty and he holds the Victor Davis Hanson Chair in Classical History and Western Civilization at Hillsdale.

In 1995, he was recognized by the Organization of American Historians for authoring the best book in American intellectual history (The Masterless: Self and Society in Modern America). More recently, he won the 2022 Bradley Prize for excellence in scholarship. His other honors include Templeton Honor Rolls, fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Center, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Academy of Education, and more.

Dr. McClay authored or edited several influential books, including “Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story” (a popular, narrative-driven U.S. history text often used in educational settings), “The Masterless,” “Why Place Matters,” and others. He frequently contributes to outlets like Law & Liberty, First Things, and The Claremont Review of Books.

In the wider culture, he has served on the National Council on the Humanities (2002–2012), as president of the Philadelphia Society, and in various advisory roles. He is a sought-after speaker on American history, civic education, and cultural memory.
