On Oct. 9, mayoral candidates Edna DeVries and Matthew Beck are set to square off in a back-and-forth debate. Hosted by the Mat-Su Chapter of AMAC, the event takes place at Wasilla Area Seniors Center. from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
DeVries currently serves as mayor of Palmer. Beck is a former Mat-Su Borough assemblyman.
Unlike most political forums in which candidates can largely resort to pre-planned stump speeches, the AMAC debate gives each candidate three minutes for opening statements. From there a moderator will pose questions which neither candidate has seen prior to the debate.

The event concludes with spontaneous questions from the audience and two-minute closing statements from the candidates.
Following the mayoral debate, school board candidates Jubilee Underwood takes on Jennifer Walther – both vying for the District 4 school board seat. Borough assembly candidates are invited to attend and meet with the audience prior to the debates. Click here for more information.
