An upcoming debate aims to identify the conservative candidates running for Mat-Su mayor and school board. On Nov. 2, Mat-Su residents will vote for mayor, two borough assembly members and three school board members.

Edna DeVries

On Oct. 9, mayoral candidates Edna DeVries and Matthew Beck are set to square off in a back-and-forth debate. Hosted by the Mat-Su Chapter of AMAC, the event takes place at Wasilla Area Seniors Center. from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

DeVries currently serves as mayor of Palmer. Beck is a former Mat-Su Borough assemblyman.

Unlike most political forums in which candidates can largely resort to pre-planned stump speeches, the AMAC debate gives each candidate three minutes for opening statements. From there a moderator will pose questions which neither candidate has seen prior to the debate.

The event concludes with spontaneous questions from the audience and two-minute closing statements from the candidates.

Following the mayoral debate, school board candidates Jubilee Underwood takes on Jennifer Walther – both vying for the District 4 school board seat. Borough assembly candidates are invited to attend and meet with the audience prior to the debates. Click here for more information.

Thanks Joel! I do hope this helps get a good crowd Saturday!

    Again, thanks so, so much!

Q: Do you believe global climate change is a threat to humanity?
    Matthew Beck answered
A: Yes. This clearly is a red Flag for me. Plus previous post a few folks mentioned him being a wolf in sheep clothing. Which we have a lot of lately. Tell the voters how conservative I am and then change stance once elected into office.
    Edna Devries
A:No. Plus she have been a great mayor in Palmer. Stood up to the attempted overreach by the Palmer city council on its citizens. She will be missed as a leader in Palmer if elected to the Matsu mayor.

  • Will says:

    I ride with DeVries!

  • Ceak says:

Devries seems like the best choice for keeping our freedoms. I hope you’ll have a recap of the debates. I won’t be able to make it in person.

  • Herman Nelson says:

Whooops! Beck just showed his true colors with the questionnaire. Global warming cultists usually hide out with democrats and communists. Beware.

  • DoneWithIt says:

Carefully read Beck’s responses to the questionnaire.
When asked if he was conservative he stated, “Fiscal conservative”.
When asked if he supported vax passports he stated, “he didn’t support the matsu borough mandating vaccine passports”. Several have already commented on the climate change question.
Beck would fit right alongside the Marxists on the Anchorage assembly.
