If election night results hold, it appears Palmer voters will be successful in recalling three leftist city council members – Sabrena Combs, Brian Daniels and Jill Valerius.

As of 9 p.m. on election day, April 19, about 63% of voters had voted to remove the three elected officials, while 37% wanted them to stay. There were 401 votes tallied on election night, with another roughly 450 early and absentee ballots left to count. These will be tabulated this week.

The recall effort began after residents discovered that the three city council members, along with former Councilwoman Julie Berberich, were all part of a private Facebook group (Mat-Su Moms for Social Justice) in which they discussed mask mandates and other controversial matters in the private online group. An independent city investigation concluded that the council members’ private discourse in a closed Facebook group was likely a violation of Alaska’s Open Meetings Act, and a failure to perform their duties of office.
