Late Thursday night, June 26, the U.S. Senate Parliamentarian ruled that the Scholarship Tax Credits, which were a part of the Educational Choice for Children Act , violated Senate Reconciliation rules, resulting in the credits being removed from the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

Efforts are underway to appeal and reverse this deeply flawed ruling and Alaska Family Council encourages you to join us in engaging right now as some sources are saying the final vote may occur by July 4.

Sen. Dan Sullivan, who supports these tax credits, told AFC that he is working with colleagues in the Senate to get them back into the bill.

We are still waiting for a response from Senator Murkowski.

Tax deductible donations could be used to pay for tuition, tutoring, special needs services, homeschooling curriculum materials, and education technology, among other uses.

The Senate Parliamentarian’s actions are the latest in a litany of such rulings where major tax and budget provisions were removed from the Senate Reconciliation bill in the last week.

These Scholarship Tax Credits would amend only the federal tax code. No changes to federal education law or policy are created in this policy.

The Scholarship Tax Credits would generate hundreds of millions of dollars in annual private charitable donations to fund scholarships for use in K-12 education. The legislation would create immediate opportunities for private donations to be made to non-profit scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) to distribute scholarships to students. Donors would receive a 100% non-refundable federal income tax credit, and the funds could be used to pay for tuition, tutoring, special needs services, homeschooling curriculum materials, and education technology, among other eligible uses.
