Pro-abortion U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski is “very concerned” that an ongoing Food and Drug Administration review of the chemical abortion drug mifepristone might result in women needing to see a doctor in-person before ingesting the powerful drug that kills preborn babies.

Murkowski aired her concerns during a Sept. 24 confirmation hearing for President Trump’s nominee to lead the FDA – Heidi Overton.

Murkowski is a member of the U.S. Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and her comments to Overton came amid the FDA’s ongoing review of mifepristone’s safety rules.

Mifepristone is a highly potent drug that is primarily used to kill a preborn baby up to 70 days gestation. It is now utilized in more than half of all Alaska abortions, causing the nourishing placenta to detach from the mother’s uterine wall, and thereby starving the developing child. A second drug (misoprostol) is given two days later to force contractions and expel the dead body from the mother’s womb. This method often results in women aborting their babies at home or in the workplace, and up to five days after ingesting the drugs. It also comes with serious and well-documented medical side effects, including prolonged, severe bleeding and life-threatening systemic infection.

In 2021, Biden’s FDA decided to make the chemical abortion drug easily available by simply ignoring longstanding federal standards such as requiring that doctors conduct a full medical examination of women before allowing them to ingest the drug. It is now available by mail and at pharmacies across America.

Murkowski sidestepped these concerns and claimed that rural Alaskans would be in a “very challenging position” if the FDA reinstituted the requirement that doctors meet with women in-person before distributing mifepristone.

Calling the drug “safe and effective,” Murkowski expressed grave misgivings about the decision to merely review the drug’s safety rules.
