I would ask Health and Social Services if the facilities they are gathering stats from are including the RU486 abortion pill in their numbers. The abortionist does not perform an abortion, so he may not be on record as providing one. Over 50% of abortions happen this way. I have talked to the Kenai abortionist, Dr. Michael Merrick, now retired after 40 years. He said he never saw the patients getting the “abortion pill”- it was handled through his office by nurses and staff. He was only needed to write a prescription. If the patient had trouble, she went to the hospital emergency room, not back to his office. I know of family clinics that provide the abortion pill that are not places to obtain a surgical abortion. Did Health and Human Services contact ALL medical practices in the state to see if they had been prescribing the abortion pill, or just the “abortion facilities”?? Also, Alaskan women ( anyone in the US, actually) can obtain an abortion pill with an online appointment with an out of state pill provider, with an online prescribing doctor, and it is mailed to her. Planned Parenthood facilitates this, also. Alaska Planned Parenthood is now seeking to have the Alaska Nursing Board approve the dispensing of the abortion pill by nurses instead of doctors. Soon, all of our informed consent laws, waiting period, parental consent, gestational limitations, heartbeat laws, etc. will be meaningless, and actually already are. Getting an abortion now days does not have to involve anyone, really. She can obtain an RU486 abortion pill with no face to face contact with a prescriber in an office ( although she could end up in the hospital later!). Who’s getting those statistics?
