While the federal budget will certainly look much different by the time it works its way through Congress, President Trump has proposed a budget that strips federal funding from abortion providers.

Sen. Dan Sullivan and Rep. Don Young are generally considered reliable pro-life votes. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, however, is highly regarded by Planned Parenthood for her willingness to break with the Republican party and support public funding of abortion clinics.

Released Feb. 10, the president’s Fiscal Year 2021 budget calls for the elimination of taxpayer funds to Planned Parenthood through the U.S. Departments of Labor and Health & Human Services. It also eliminates funding for the United Nations Population Fund, which supports abortion policies around the world.

“The Budget prioritizes the value of human life by ensuring that Federal funding does not support abortions,” the plan states. “The Budget proposes to prohibit Federal funding, such as in the Title X Family Planning and Medicaid programs, for certain entities that provide abortion services. The Budget also protects conscience rights, prohibits coercion in healthcare, and allows private parties to enforce such rights in Federal court. With these protections, the Administration will continue to ensure robust protection of conscience rights and religious liberty.”

While it has many hoops to go through before landing on the president’s desk, the proposed budge gives legislators including Alaska’s Congressional Delegation a chance to debate and vote on pro-life measures that restrict public abortion funding.

Planned Parenthood currently receives more than $500 million in taxpayer funds each year.
